The Ethereum-compatible blockchain wants users to be able to replace the keys controlling an account without changing its address, opening the door to passkeys, recovery tools and post-quantum security.

  • Monad has proposed separating wallet addresses from the credentials that control them, allowing users to replace lost or outdated keys without moving assets or changing addresses.
  • The design could support passkeys, multiple signers, account recovery and quantum-resistant cryptography while allowing existing accounts to continue operating normally.
  • The proposal is an early draft, and its authors have not yet written a detailed implementation specification.

Quantum computers pose a potential long-term threat to crypto because sufficiently powerful machines could eventually break the digital signatures used to prove ownership of coins.
